Pak-US Relations: KLL; What to Do?

Rawalpindi/Pakistan – October 27, 2009

Pakistan Thinkers Forum Trust (TFP) met on October 26, 2009 for its regular monthly meeting. The issue for the evening was, ‘Pak-US Relations: K.L Bill’. The learned speaker on the occasion was Chairman TFP, Lt Gen Asad Durrani. The prominent names amongst those who discussed and debated the issue were:

a.       Gen Mirza Aslam Beg.
b.       Mr. Agha Murtaza Pooya
c.       Mr. Sultan Bashir Mahmood
d.       Mrs. Nosheen Saeed

The events and developments in post 9/11 period, leading to the present state of bombing, blasts and armed attacks remained a matter of perpetual concern, in addition to K.L Bill.

There was consensus on following points, as reasons for the current situation:

a.    Alliance and support of Pakistan for US in the occupation of Afghanistan and aggression against its people.
b.    Launching of military operations in Waziristan in the wake of life attempt on Gen Musharraf.
c.    Gen Musharraf allowing US agencies to reconnoiter, map, survey and cultivate and hire agents from Pakhtoon belt of Pakistan. Killing of innocent students, girls and boys in Lal Masjid was terrorism.
d.    USA is the biggest terrorist, going by its own definition of terrorism. It has been indulging in state terrorism over all times and places; may it be Philippines, Japan, Vietnam, Iraq or Afghanistan.
e.    US policies, at least for the three countries in the region, are Ziono-centric.
f.    There are many breakaway and rogue groups with divergent aims and goals. They have many sponsors and masters. Treating them alike is a big mistake.
g.    Lumping, grouping and naming all resistance groups as Taliban is a blunder. Taliban are freedom fighters, fighting US occupation in Afghanistan.

The learned analysts and scholars unanimously urge for the following suggestions and recommendations.

a.       Pakistan must stop its support of US occupation and aggression against Afghanistan in particular, and of Muslim people in general.
b.       Govt of Pakistan should stop fighting its own people. Government must resort to negotiations with various factions and groups. Military operations may be used but with lot of care; only to lead to the political process.
