Srinagar, MTT News Desk: The Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Movement, a constituent of All Parties Hurriyet Conference (APHC), has appealed to the United Nations to intervene for a thorough probe into gross human rights violations by Indian armed forces in Occupied State of Jammu & Kashmir (OSJK).
In a letter to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the JKPM said that the people of OSJK had long been seeking the world body’s intervention to probe gross human rights violations and monitor deteriorating human rights situation in Occupied State
of Jammu & Kashmir (OSJK).
“The Indian forces in the occupied territory have been committing widespread human rights violations by killing innocent people in fake encounters, by resorting to unprovoked firing on peaceful protesters, ” the letter said.
It added, “More than ten thousand people have gone missing after being arrested by the Indian forces from their homes or place of work or from the streets in the broad day light.”
Bringing the world human rights body’ s attention towards the appalling human rights scenario in the territory, the JKPM said, “During the past 23 years of civil uprising in Kashmir, Indian forces have killed thousands of innocent civilians declaring them militants.
The revelation of thousands of unidentified graves across the disputed territory and their confirmation by the institutions and organisations of International repute like BBC, CNN, Asia Watch and Amnesty International should have been enough reason for the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights to step in and exert pressure on India for conducting a through probe into these incidents of mass human rights violations.”

“Above all the Human Rights Commission appointed by the occupations authorities has recently released a report making startling revelations about the unmarked graves. It is high time for the UN HCHR to take serious note of rights violations in occupied Kashmir,” the JKPM demanded.
The Executive Director of Kashmir Centre London, Professor Nazir Ahmed Shawl has said that the democratic space is not being provided to pro-freedom leadership in Occupied State of Jammu & Kashmir (OSJK).
Professor Shawl, who called on Lord Qurban Hussain at his residence in Luton, apprised the British MP of the latest political situation in the OSJK.
He told Lord Qurban that draconian laws like Armed Forces Special Powers Act and Public Safety Act prevailed in the occupied territory as Omar Abdullah administration had failed to fulfil hits pledges to lift them. Hundreds of people continue to languish in interrogation centres and jails, Shawl said.
Lord Qurban Hussain assured Professor Shawl that he would continue his efforts to raise the human rights violations in OSJK at all available fora.
The only way to ensure peace and tranquillity in south Asian region is to redeem the pledged right of self-determination to the people of Jammu and Kashmir by allowing them to exercise this right in a referendum organised under the auspices of the United Nations, he added.
Shawl invited lord Qurban to attend the right of self-determination day being organised on 5th of January at Luton.
