In February this year, Indian military procurement units descended on the DefExpo 2010 trade fair in New Delhi. Inaugurating the Indian Defence Exhibition, Defence Minister A.K. Antony said that India’s defence expenditure, which is 2.5 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP), is going to increase. He pointed out, “our defence industry is open up to 100 percent for Indian private sector, while foreign direct investment is allowed up to 26 percent.” Antony further indicated that our government is committed to rapid modernisation of armed forces.

Victory in East Pakistan made the Indian leaders euphoric and megalomaniac. They ventured upon an ambitious force modernization program and also conducted nuclear test in 1974 which impinged upon the security of Pakistan. It impelled Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto to lay the foundations of uranium enrichment plant at Kahuta on 31 July 1976 under Dr. AQ Khan. He pursued the nuclear option despite host of barricades built around him and for this act he was made a horrible example.
Pakistan is being blamed for Mumbai attacks and is under immense international pressure to take action against the culprits. Islamabad is trying its level best to sustain international pressure as it hasn’t got much choice to fulfill the demand such as ‘to call a chicken a monster’. Despite the fact that cases against those blamed for Mumbai attacks are still pending in Pakistani courts, New Delhi is pressurizing Pakistan to take action against those suspected to be involved in the attacks. One wonders, what will happen if innocence of these people is proved in the court. One suspects that in such a case India is not going to accept the court’s verdict. On the contrary, it is beyond comprehension that why Ajmal Amir Kasab has not been put on the gallows by now, when India claims to have been in possession of solid evidences. Despite the passage of around one year and three months, India is unable to take action against Kasab, who as claimed by India was caught red handed. However, New Delhi is expecting from Pakistan to eliminate everyone who is suspected by India to be involved in Mumbai attacks.
It is very difficult for a person to judge another person. Major Dimple Singla is not an exception. Being a lady officer in Indian Army, one feels sympathetic about Major Dimple Singla even if she is at fault. However, the fact cannot be denied that justice is blind and rewards and punishment should be purely on merit. The case of Major Dimple Singla is, in fact, an eye opener for the rest of the lady officer serving in Indian Army and Para Military Forces.
